“What if you could type directly from your brain?”- Facebook

Image
That was the question Facebook executive Regina Dugan, who runs the company’s secretive research and hardware lab Building 8, posed to the audience Wednesday at the company’s annual F8 developer conference in San Jose. The question was not meant to be rhetorical. Dugan and Facebook are actually making technology intended to do just that. Facebook is building what it calls a “brain-computer speech-to-text interface,” technology that’s supposed to translate your thoughts directly from your brain to a computer screen without any need for speech or fingertips. Learn to Lead in a Male-Dominated Manufacturing Company

Image
How I Learned to Lead in a Male-Dominated Manufacturing Company by  Miniya Chatterji After living away from India for 14 years, I returned three years ago to create and take charge of the sustainability department of Jindal Steel & Power, one of India’s largest manufacturing business conglomerates. I realized that in Indian business, power is still bafflingly associated with virility and manliness. Stereotypes dictate that women are not naturally accorded the same power as men, even in similar leadership roles. And ironically, in a country where one million people will turn  18 every month for the next several years , being 60 is still one of the essential criteria for being considered for a leadership position. Here I was a woman leader, half the age of my peers, in a fast-growing company in which a mere 3.5% were women. Not only did I have to establish the vision for the company’s sustainability — holistic growth of the company is how we defined it — but al...

Zophop provides aggregated information with different time and fare options, along with nearest bus and train station locations. Having worked in the car buying and selling marketplace for more than a decade, CarWale Founder and CEO Mohit Dubey and his friend, Vinayak Bhavnani, were convinced that not more than 10 percent of Indians would own a car or any form of private transport at any point in their lives. It's time to dump Moore's Law to advance computing

Image
An end to Moore's Law will prompt chipmakers to think outside the box and pave the future of computing, suggests a prominent computer scientist. D umping Moore's Law is perhaps the best thing that could happen to computers, as it'll hasten the move away from an aging computer architecture holding back hardware innovation. That's the view of prominent scientist R. Stanley Williams, a senior fellow in the Hewlett Packard Labs. Williams played a key role in the creation of  the memristor  by HP in 2008. Moore's Law is an observation made by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore in 1965 that has helped make devices smaller and faster. It predicts that the density of transistors would double every 18 to 24 months, while the cost of making chips goes down. Read more..

7 Misconceptions About Entrepreneurship

Image
You may expect that success will come fast (or not at all). You may see entrepreneurship as an easy way to get rich. But these assumptions are false. Entrepreneurship is romanticized in our culture, and it’s easy to see why: We live in a capitalistic society that values the creation of ideas, the unlimited potential of business and of course the prestige of attaining wealth and power. On top of that, we have entrepreneurial celebrities like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg inspiring countless waves of new entrepreneurs striving to achieve the same level of success they did. That is a good thing -- mostly: Startups drive economic growth, and the entrepreneurial journey is valuable in almost any future application. However, too many young people (and people new to business ownership) end up being in over their heads because they believed in these common entrepreneurial misconceptions: 1. Entrepreneurs are born to lead. Read Full Article
